Overview
The Lancia Stratos made its rally debut in 1973. Its angular looks, Ferrari power and tremendous handling immediately propelled it not only to the head of the pack, but also into the hearts of rally fans the world over. The Stratos proved to be immediately successful in world rally competition. Not only did it win the 1974 World Rally Championship, it also secured the crown for Lancia in 1975 as well. But it was the third season for the car in 1976 that saw it dominate.
In the hands of Sandro Munari and Bjorn Waldegard the Stratos locked out the podium on the Monte Carlo and San Remo rallies, won the Portuguese rally and finished first and second in Corsica. On tarmac the car was unbeatable. These strong results, as well as the superb Alitalia livery further cemented the diminutive Italian car as a legend of the Rally Stage. Lancia scored 112 points in 1976, nearly twice as many as Opel in second. While the Stratos never reigned supreme again, it was a terrific send off for the car.features
